Synopsis
In a rain-slicked near-future metropolis, Marcus Vale is the man you call when something needs to be done. But when the job is executed with his signature precision, Marcus wakes to find his own obituary trending and every exit sealed. Hunted by his former clients and taunted by haunting fragments of erased memories, he races through the underbelly of the city to uncover why 'done' never meant freedom. As the final pieces lock into place, Marcus must decide whether to finish the ultimate job or finally walk away from the only life he's ever known.
The story
Marcus Vale, 48, executes his flawless final hit on a rainy rooftop, collects his fee, and returns to his sterile apartment to discover his own death has already been ordered. His handler vanishes and every contact begins hunting him.
Marcus descends into the criminal underworld, piecing together that his entire career was engineered to eliminate loose ends for a shadowy cabal; he confronts ghosts of past targets whose identities bleed into his own fractured psyche.
In a brutal climax atop the city's data core, Marcus chooses to erase the cabal's ledger instead of himself, walking into the dawn as a free man while the system collapses behind him.
