Oh well
An apathetic slacker's shrugging 'oh well' to every catastrophe turns him into an unwilling messiah of resignation in a world unraveling.
An apathetic slacker's shrugging 'oh well' to every catastrophe turns him into an unwilling messiah of resignation in a world unraveling.
Synopsis
Alex Rivera, a mid-level drone in a dying city, meets every disaster—layoffs, breakups, riots—with the same vacant 'oh well.' His phrase goes viral when a livestream captures him ignoring a building collapse. Suddenly cult followers, media vultures, and a desperate government swarm him for answers he never intended to give. As global crises accelerate, Alex's total non-resistance becomes the only force that might prevent total annihilation—or guarantee it. Torn between the spotlight and his couch, Alex drags his ragtag circle through escalating absurdities: a billionaire's bunker pitch, a doomsday cult wedding, and a final confrontation with the president. The more he refuses to care, the more the world bends to his indifference. In the end, his ultimate 'oh well' decides humanity's fate.
The story
Alex's routine apathy collides with a city-wide blackout and breakup; his casual dismissal is filmed and explodes online, branding him 'the Oh Well Guy.'
Fame snowballs into cults, corporate exploitation, and government coercion; Alex's refusal to engage sparks riots and a global 'resignation movement' while his friends fracture under pressure.
At the brink of nuclear escalation, Alex confronts the chaos he's accidentally fueled and delivers one final, world-altering 'oh well' that forces collective surrender or rebirth.

INT. CRAMPED STUDIO APARTMENT - NIGHT Flickering TV light. ALEX RIVERA, 32, in stained sweatpants, scrolls his phone while sirens wail outside. Onscreen: a mushroom cloud blooms over the coast. He doesn't blink. ALEX Oh well. The phone rings. He lets it. A low rumble shakes the room; plaster dust rains. Alex sips flat soda. ALEX (CONT'D) (to himself) Could be worse. His roommate RICO bursts in, wild-eyed. RICO Dude, the city's gone! We gotta— ALEX Yeah. Nah. Alex mutes the TV. Outside, the skyline glows orange. He exhales, almost content.
Why now
In an era of nonstop crises and doomscrolling burnout, this film captures the seductive pull of total detachment while asking if surrender might be our last sane act—or our final mistake.
